🗺 Detailed map of the Global Reef Expedition dive sites, Ribbon Reefs, northern Great Barrier Reef (Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation; opens in a new window)
Global Reef Expedition station AUR610 on Ribbon Reef 6, northern Great Barrier Reef (-15.2714, 145.7597), surveyed on 4 September 2014. The expedition surveyed Ribbon Reef 6 as one of its Pink (Preservation Zone, no entry without a permit) reefs; on the GBRMPA zoning map the recorded position itself falls in the adjoining Buffer Zone, about 70 m outside the Preservation Zone boundary, a distance within the precision of a dive-site GPS fix on a reef edge.
Regional context only: surveyed about eighteen months before the 2016 mass bleaching, an event that severely bleached hundreds of reefs on the northern Great Barrier Reef (Hughes et al. 2017); thermal stress at the Northern GBR virtual station now averages a 5-year annual maximum of 7.8 degree heating weeks.
No other surveys have been conducted at this site to date. Within 5 km, one independent station, AIMS manta tow at RIBBON NO 6 REEF, 1.68 km away, read 11–35% between 1994 and 2017.
Within 5 km, 1 independent survey station recorded hard coral cover in 6 surveys between 1994 and 2017. The one station surveyed in more than one year declined by 23.8 points between its first and latest surveys. The longest record, RIBBON NO 6 REEF (AIMS manta tow, 1.68 km away), went from 35% in 1994 to 11% in 2017. The most recent nearby survey is from 2017, so these values predate recent heat stress. This site's own estimate (59%) sits 24 points above the range of these surveys (11–35%); the methods differ, so the comparison is context, not a like-for-like test.
Collected by other programs using different methods (AIMS manta tow is a towed visual estimate in categorical bins), so these are context for the figures above, not a like-for-like comparison. Where a station was surveyed more than once, the cell shows either the range of its values or, as a single value, the mean of surveys made in one year. Station names are not dive-site names.
