🗺 Detailed map of the Global Reef Expedition dive sites, Yonge, Hicks, and Carter Reefs, northern Great Barrier Reef (Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation; opens in a new window)
Global Reef Expedition station AUCT50 on Carter Reef, northern Great Barrier Reef (-14.5696, 145.6087), surveyed on 11 September 2014. Carter Reef lies within a Preservation (Pink) Zone, the GBR's most strictly protected category, with restricted entry and no take.
Regional context, not an observation here: surveyed about eighteen months before the 2016 mass bleaching, an event that severely bleached hundreds of reefs on the northern Great Barrier Reef (Hughes et al. 2017); 5-year mean annual maximum thermal stress at the Northern GBR virtual station is 7.8 degree heating weeks.
No other surveys have been conducted at this site to date. Within 5 km, eight independent stations recorded 3.9–66% hard coral cover between 1993 and 2023; the nearest, XL Catlin Seaview Survey at transect 12005, 0.78 km away, read 5.9–17% between 2012 and 2017.

LOF Global Reef ExpeditionYear-average (illustrative only, programs differ)Within 5 km, 8 independent survey stations recorded hard coral cover in 126 surveys between 1993 and 2023. Of the 7 stations surveyed in more than one year, 5 were scored by divers or by people annotating photographs: 5 increased (by 16.3–23.3 points) between their first and latest surveys. The other 2 were scored by automated image analysis: 2 declined by more than 7 points. Two stations share the longest span (1993–2023); one, YONGE REEF (AIMS manta tow, 3.80 km away), went from 14% in 1993 to 35% in 2023. Since 2021, station-year means average 29% (range 18–35%; n = 12 station-years from 12 surveys). This site's own estimate (46%) sits 12 points above the recent range up to 2 km away (29–34%); the methods differ, so the comparison is context, not a like-for-like test.
Collected by other programs using different methods (Reef Check uses point-intercept transects; AIMS manta tow is a towed visual estimate in categorical bins; AIMS LTMP uses fixed photo-transects; the XL Catlin Seaview Survey uses photo-transects with automated image annotation), so these are context for the figures above, not a like-for-like comparison. Where a station was surveyed more than once, the cell shows either the range of its values or, as a single value, the mean of surveys made in one year. Station names are not dive-site names.
