🗺 Detailed map of the Global Reef Expedition dive sites, Jewell, Hilder, and Eyrie Reefs, northern Great Barrier Reef (Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation; opens in a new window)
Global Reef Expedition station AU61A66 on Unnamed Reef 61A, far northern Great Barrier Reef (-13.3945, 143.9877), surveyed on 13 September 2014. As a Preservation Zone site, this reef carries the Great Barrier Reef's strictest protection, with entry itself restricted. The expedition's own site table classifies AU61A66 as an outer barrier reef on an exposed aspect.
Alongside the hard coral already reported for this site, the same transects recorded 9.1% crustose coralline algae, 7.4% turf, 0.6% macroalgae, and 0.4% cyanobacteria. Non-living substrate came to 5.1% dead coral, 2.9% rubble, and 2.8% sand. These figures come from the expedition's own 933-site benthic master and are survey results, not photographic estimates.
Paired fish transects recorded about 27 fish species per transect and about 8.4 kg per 100 m2 of biomass.
