Site description
Setting
Global Reef Expedition station AU3480 on Unnamed Reef 34, far northern Great Barrier Reef (-11.1695, 143.1137), surveyed on 17 September 2014, inside a no-take Marine National Park (Green) Zone.
Coral cover
- Reference: Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation, Global Reef Expedition (in situ transect)
- The in situ benthic transects recorded 40% live coral cover against a 36% algal fraction at a survey depth of 4.9 m.
- That transect value is the authoritative cover figure for this site, and no photographs exist for the site.
- Transect mean 40 ± 2.4% SE (n = 15 transects; Living Oceans Foundation per-transect benthic data); the headline above is the expedition's station value.
Stressors
Regional context, not an observation here: the survey pre-dates the 2016 mass bleaching by about eighteen months in a sector it hit severely; the 5-year mean annual maximum thermal stress at the Far Northern GBR virtual station is 11.1 degree heating weeks.
