Site description

Setting

A second gas vent on the Mayreau reef system, about 600 m south-southwest of the main CO2 vent studied by Enochs et al. (2020), found on the first dive of the 2019 trip (26 September 2019, about nine minutes of photographs). A fine stream of bubbles rose from sand between boulders beside a white, bacterial-looking film.

Coral cover

Comparisons with other data

No other surveys have been conducted at this site to date. Within 5 km, 22 independent stations recorded 1.2–44% hard coral cover between 1999 and 2019; the nearest, XL Catlin Seaview Survey at transect 22017, 0.68 km away, read 8.5% in 2013.

Other notes

The position is approximate (from Anderson's recollection; the dive was not logged).

CV model comparison

Mean 30%, median 25% across 21 photos.
More infoThe mean is above the median because several frames are portraits of single colonies. No computer-vision method yet estimates coral cover accurately on new images, so treat this as indicative rather than a measurement; it is revised as the methods improve.
Headline: Claude computer vision, a blind point count of this site's own edited photographs; no other computer-vision method has been run on them yet.
More infoNo diver transect exists for this trip, so treat the value as indicative.

Within 5 km, 22 independent survey stations recorded hard coral cover in 29 records between 1999 and 2019. Of the 7 stations surveyed in more than one year, 5 increased and 2 changed by less than 5 percentage points between their first and latest surveys. The longest record, Petit Rameau (AGRRA, 2.93 km away), went from 34% in 2015 to 44% in 2018. The most recent nearby survey is from 2019, so these values predate recent heat stress. This site's own estimate (30%) sits within the range of these surveys (1.2–44%); the methods differ, so the comparison is context, not a like-for-like test.

Collected by other programs using different methods (Reef Check uses point-intercept transects; AGRRA uses benthic point-intercept transects, reported here as live coral cover; the XL Catlin Seaview Survey uses photo-transects with automated image annotation), so these are context for the figures above, not a like-for-like comparison. Where a station was surveyed more than once the range is shown. Station names are not dive-site names.
