Site summary
Read this summary in:

Nudi Rock is a sheer wall dominated by soft corals, sea fans, and green Tubastraea at mid-depths, with Porites and Pachyseris framework, brain corals, and patches Anderson estimated at 40-50% live cover; fish life included Napoleon wrasse, dogtooth tuna, and gray reef sharks. A blind Claude computer-vision point count puts coral cover around 30%.

Site description

Setting

No current and 20 m viz. Sheer vertical wall at base of small island. Reef extended to about 20 m.

General benthic features

Wall dominated by soft corals and sea fans, with some Pachyseris spp. Napoleon wrasse, hunting chubs, small (1.5-m) dogtooth tuna, two gray reef sharks. At 15 m, reef dominated by soft corals, sea fans, and green Tubastrea (e.g., Image 5).

Seriatopora caliendrum was relatively common. Large massive Porites (e.g., Image 3).

Several species of plating corals, including Montipora (e.g., Image 2).

Pocillopora verrucosa. Neon green fluorescent soft coral. Stylophora pistillata relatively common at 12-14 m. Porites framework though with many foliaceous corals (e.g., Image 4).

Some areas instead dominated by Tubastrea and soft corals instead of hard corals. Giant barrel sponges common throughout site. High coral biodiversity @ 10-15 m. Porites and Pachyseris framework. Seriatopora caliendrum common in area. Lobophyllia, Sarcophyton, and never before seen massive Porites sp. Numerous species of brain corals.

Coral cover

Coral cover: 30% — a blind Claude computer-vision point count of 97 of Anderson's edited photographs (20 points per photo; water, fish, and obstructions excluded). Other computer-vision methods are listed in the method table.

Fish and other fauna

Clouds of small fish, initially less predators than “Four Kings” but eventually grew in number/density/diversity as dive progressed: chubs and trevally, chasing bait ball school. Staggering fish life at 15 m.

CV model comparison

As of September 2026 no computer-vision method estimates coral cover accurately on new images, so treat this as indicative rather than a measurement; it is revised as the methods improve.
Headline: Claude computer vision — a blind point count of this site's own photographs (Anderson, 2026-09-27: Claude CV is the main coral-cover value).
More infoDINOv3 and CoralSCOP were run on the same photos and are listed for comparison. Coralscapes v2 and v1 were also run but are not shown: Anderson does not consider Coralscapes reliable for these photos. No diver transect exists for this trip, so agreement between the rows is not accuracy, and as of September 2026 no computer-vision method estimates coral cover accurately on new images; treat every row as indicative.
