Part of the regional summary: Oman

Novice Bay is a strongly zoned Muscat reef, its shallow flat of brain corals and Pocillopora thickets grading into leather-coral slopes and then deep coralline buttresses, with a resting green turtle, a banded sea snake, and a camouflaged scorpionfish among the highlights. Published hard coral cover is 47% (manual point counts), with soft coral at 29% - this was the only one of the seven 2024 Oman survey sites to show any trace of bleaching (0.2% of points), recorded weeks before the region's July 2024 bleaching event began in earnest.

A strongly zoned reef below a barren Muscat headland: a shallow flat of brain corals, lobophylliids, and Pocillopora thickets grades into slopes carpeted by Sarcophyton-type leather corals, then deep coralline buttresses and a rubble plain with sea whips (e.g., Image 1, Image 2, Image 4, Image 6, Image 7, Image 15, Image 19, Image 20).
Hard coral cover 47% (manual CoralNet point counts, 2025 re-analysis; Mayfield 2025, Platax), with soft coral 29.0% and turf algae 14.4%. Published hard coral cover 47% (Mayfield 2025, Platax; manual CoralNet point counts, benthic denominator). Sample sizes: manual 135 photos · CoralNet 114 · DINOv3 120 · CoralSCOP 130. Multi-method mean 38.7% ± 11.
The only site of the survey with any bleaching — a trace 0.2% of hard coral points. No bleaching observed during these May 2024 surveys, before the seasonal SST peak; NOAA CRW recorded Alert Level 2 heat stress and bleaching was reported along this coast from July 2024, weeks after the surveys. No crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) or other corallivores evident.
Highlights included a resting green turtle, a banded sea snake, an ocellated nudibranch, and a camouflaged scorpionfish (e.g., Image 12).
Coral cover — external cross-reference (Reef Check). Two independent measurements, reported side by side and deliberately not averaged. Anderson Mayfield / CRD: 38.7% hard coral (2024). The two are 7 years apart (CRD later). Methods differ (CRD photographic/point-count index vs Reef Check point-intercept transect). Reef Check site positions are approximate; at 0.39 km apart the two surveys may have sampled different patches of the same reef, which is the main caveat on this comparison. Different station, different observers: a near-concurrent cross-check, not a repeat of this site.

Dr. Coral (CRD)Year-average (increasing)Within 5 km, 8 independent survey stations recorded hard coral cover in 33 records between 2017 and 2026. Of the 1 station surveyed in more than one year, 1 increased between their first and latest surveys. The longest record, BK big mount (MERMAID project “coral cover BK”*, 1.20 km away), went from 60% in 2024 to 70% in 2025. Surveys since 2021 average 46% (range 34–70%, n=10). This site's own estimate (39%) sits within the recent range (34–70%); the methods differ, so the comparison is context, not a like-for-like test.
Collected by other programs using different methods (Reef Check uses point-intercept transects; MERMAID is a data platform: each MERMAID row names the organization that did the survey, and its method is in the row's hover text. *Conducted by citizen scientists), so these are context for the figures above, not a like-for-like comparison. Where a station was surveyed more than once the range is shown. Station names are not dive-site names.
