Part of the regional summaries: Maldives - Central (Male Atolls / Ari / Vaavu) and Maldives

Ari Atoll's southern tip is caught mid-crisis, with crown-of-thorns starfish wedged under ledges amid the fresh white skeletons of eaten staghorn and cauliflower coral - an outbreak in progress even as anemone gardens and coral thickets persist nearby. The second dive delivered a whale shark gliding along the slope. Computer vision cover estimate is around 18.6%.

Two dives at Ari's southern tip, and both extremes of reef drama in one morning.
Yet the reef shoulder still carries dense living coral thickets, anemone gardens with a crimson, balled-up showpiece hiding its anemonefish, a cruising sea turtle, and clouds of anthias along the drop (e.g., Image 3, Image 4, Image 6, Image 7, Image 16, Image 17, Image 18, Image 19, Image 21).
Coral cover: 19% — photo-derived, and the two methods broadly agree (19% vs 19%). This site's figure is the mean of two independent computer vision passes over Anderson's own frames: a DINOv3 calibrated point classifier reads 18.5% and a CoralSCOP computer vision reads 18.7%, a spread of 0.2 percentage points. The map publishes the mean so sites can be sorted against one another, but the honest statement of what is known here is the 19–19% range: the two products have different denominators and should not be treated as one measurement.
Under the overhangs lurks the villain: crown-of-thorns seastars in their gothic blue-violet livery, wedged two to a crevice, and all around them the fresh white skeletons of staghorn and cauliflower corals eaten in the preceding days — the photographer bluntly labels it an outbreak (e.g., Image 1, Image 2, Image 5, Image 8, Image 9, Image 10, Image 11, Image 12, Image 13, Image 14).
Then, on the second dive, the blue delivers a whale shark — first a ghostly bulk in the haze, then the full constellation of pale spots gliding along the slope while divers scramble (e.g., Image 15, Image 20, Image 23, Image 24, Image 25).

Within 5 km, 6 independent survey stations recorded hard coral cover in 19 records between 2011 and 2025. Of the 1 station surveyed in more than one year, 1 increased between their first and latest surveys. The longest record, Holiday Thila (Reef Check, 4.46 km away), went from 13% in 2015 to 28% in 2025. One survey since 2021 recorded 28%. This site's own estimate (19%) sits 8.9 points below the recent value (28%); the methods differ, so the comparison is context, not a like-for-like test.
Collected by other programs using different methods (Reef Check uses point-intercept transects; the XL Catlin Seaview Survey uses photo-transects with automated image annotation), so these are context for the figures above, not a like-for-like comparison. Where a station was surveyed more than once the range is shown. Station names are not dive-site names.
