Site description
Setting
Batu Bolong is the exposed pinnacle in the Lintah Strait at -8.542, 119.635, in the central sector of Komodo National Park. Context: Komodo NP sits where Indian and Pacific Ocean water meet, and the strong tidal flow through these straits is a park-wide feature, not something measured on these dives.

Stressors
Heat stress: five-year mean annual maximum of 7.2 degree-heating weeks (map satellite layer). No crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) or other corallivores evident.
Comparisons with other data
The nearest independent measurement is a Reef Check station called "Mawan (Sector 2)" 1.26 km away, 8.8% hard coral cover in 2020; four surveys within 2 km, all from 2020, span 8.8-51%. That range - a sixfold difference inside 2 km in a single survey year - is why the 8.8% must not be carried onto this site.
Dive record
It is one of the best-documented pins in this set: dived twice on the August 2009 trip. 15 August 2009, entry 13:00, maximum depth 22.9 m, 65 minutes, buddy Inge; and 18 August 2009, entry 10:30, maximum depth 25.0 m, 62 minutes, buddy John, whose log line records diving "the north part first" in "perfect conditions". The 2009 log calls it the best wall dive of the trip.
