Lab / modelled / literature studies carry the lab's coordinates, not a reef — that is why they land in Europe. A probiotic developed in Germany and tested on a reef shows at the reef only if the paper was coded field or mixed.

BACI = Before–After–Control–Impact: the site is measured both before and after the intervention and against an untreated control site. It is the only common design that separates the intervention from background change, which is why so few studies qualify.
Control + baseline = BACI + before/after + inside/outside. This is about study design, not location — it is independent of the Setting filter above. A reef study with no control or baseline is field-tested but cannot attribute cause.

Studies that report survival or growth of reef-building corals, read from the full text (2026). Their efficacy is taken from those results; a verdict needs a comparison: an untreated control, a before/after baseline, a reference site or another method. Use Rigor above to keep only stronger designs.
